HMP High Down is an adult male Local Category C.
We have a highly skilled, wide ranging primary care team managed by the Head of Healthcare, who cover emergency response, medicines management and pharmacy, triage, a range of health clinics and more.
Services include:
- GP services
- Optometry
- Podiatry
- Physiotherapy
- Sexual health services
There is also a highly-skilled mental health inreach team, who act as a single point of access and provide a range of therapeutic treatments for those with low level and high-level mental health need, including those with intellectual disability. They work in close partnership with the HMPPS safety team, and have varying healthcare roles within the service.

- Substance Misuse: Forward Trust
- Offering a period of stabilisation following by either maintenance or detoxification. The primary care team work closely with the Forward trust service and Drug Strategy to deliver a psycho-social model. Continuity of care is an essential requirement to ensure that when prisoners are transferred or discharged from prison that their care is continued by appropriate others. The Substance Misuse team also work very closely with the Mental Health Service.
