HMP Send operates as a closed Female Training Prison. It also houses a 63-bedded IFSL Incentivise Substance free living unit, a therapeutic community with a capacity of 40 and a PIPE unit housing 40.
The healthcare team at HMP Send, provide primary care and mental health services, with specialist psychology services providing input to the PIPE (Psychological Informed Planned Environment) unit. They provide in house specialist care, and promote independence with a recovery-orientated approach, using digital technology to enhance service provision.
The mental health inreach team operates as a single point of access, and provides low level and high-level support. The primary care team offer a wide range of services including:
- nurse-led clinics
- GP
- access to specialist services such as physiotherapy, podiatry and optometry
We have pregnancy and perinatal services, and the team work closely with the HMPPS to provide care for those who are vulnerable. An HMIP/CQC recent inspection highlighted the excellent healthcare provision provided at HMP Send.

The healthcare services are onsite seven days a week early morning to evening.
