Psychiatry colleagues at CNWL have launched a quality improvement project to encourage more trainee doctors to consider psychiatry as a career.
Their findings have now been published online by Cambridge University Press on behalf of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
The project introduced a tailored online teaching programme consisting of 12 sessions, delivered to each new group of foundation year doctors rotating through St Charles Hospital. The first group started in May 2023, and the programme is now in its third cycle.
To measure the programme’s impact, the team used online questionnaires before, during, and after the sessions. Results from the third group showed a significant increase in interest in psychiatry, rising from 30% at the start to 95% by the end.
The article reads:
“This foundation year development initiative provides a well-liked, bespoke and innovative approach to train foundation year doctors on placement at NHS trusts.”
