Dr Jeff Fehler, CNWL Clinical Director and Consultant Addictions Psychiatrist discussed clinical leadership and change with aspiring leaders on our Management Fundamentals programme.

The programme delivered jointly by our Trust and Imperial College Business School fosters an understanding of NHS management by exploring various strategic and team level challenges faced.

Dr Fehler provided some personal examples, demonstrating how he, as a clinical leader, engaged colleagues to bring about change.

These case studies included the following:

  • Creating a business intelligence tool report to analyse equity of access and disparities in outcome by population group in his services
  • Initiatives to achieve and maintain Hepatitis C micro-elimination (elimination in a defined population group, which in our case is those with addictions)
  • A novel approach to governance of patient safety incidents, to facilitate decision making regarding a suitable learning response
  • Introduction of electronic prescribing in Addictions (a UK first)

Here is some feedback from participants on the day:

"It is inspiring to hear the organisation’s direction and that we are encouraged to innovate and bring on change, even though at a local level we often feel stuck. [The programme] has brought motivation to keep fighting for positive change and to escalate as needed for support."

"A lot to think about! Great to have several different examples with the common thread through them."

"On the whole really good and relevant talks. Lots of food for thought and to implement in our work."

"The presentations and conversations were very motivating."
