Hasini’s journey through our Volunteer to Career (VtC) programme is an example of how volunteering can open doors to a rewarding career in the Trust. The VtC programme is all about helping people grow, and Hasini’s story? It truly shows how life changing this kind of experience can be.
Finding her purpose in Step-Down services
Hasini started out in Step-Down services, where she helped patients transition back into the community after leaving the hospital. She recalls, “I love helping people and wanted to make an impact in others' lives.”
From day one, her dedication and enthusiasm were clear - she was on a mission to touch lives, spread positivity, and be a force of pure good. Her heart was fully in it, and her passion was felt by everyone around her.
Building meaningful connections with patients
One of the most special aspects of Hasini’s time volunteering was the meaningful connections she made with the patients.
She recalls a particular resident: “There was a resident who waited for my visit to play board games and spend time with me. When she learned she’d be going home, she hugged me, cried, and told me how much she was going to miss me.”
Moments like these truly highlight how much Hasini’s kindness meant to those she cared for. “The patients responded very positively. Many of them used to look forward to seeing me every week.”
Bringing creativity to patient care
Hasini didn’t just stick to the usual routine - she brought her own flair and creativity into the mix."
Sometimes, traditional methods didn’t quite work,” she explained. “By talking to them, I found out about their favourites and hobbies, so I made sure to include those - whether it was cooking, playing games, or painting.”
She even used music and art therapy to help patients unwind and express themselves. “These activities helped improve both their physical health and mental recovery.” That extra effort made all the difference, bringing joy and comfort to the patients and making her time with them even more special.
Guidance and support from the VtC Programme
The VtC programme played a key role in helping Hasini succeed.
“The guidance I received was incredibly helpful. They gave me feedback on my CV and personal statement, which made a big difference, especially since English isn’t my first language.”
That extra support gave her the confidence she needed to move forward. “Without their help, I don’t think I would have felt as confident when applying for new roles.”
Gaining essential skills for the future
Through her volunteering, Hasini developed skills that went far beyond the basics, skills like communication, patience, and adaptability that will serve her well throughout her career.
She explains, “Volunteering has taught me to connect with patients on a personal level, ensuring they feel respected and valued. That’s so important in healthcare.” These skills were crucial as she continued to grow both personally and professionally.
Becoming a Bank Support Worker
And then, the cherry on top - Hasini being offered the Bank Support Worker role! She says,
“I was thrilled! It felt like a natural progression from volunteering, and I’m excited to contribute to wider society in a professional capacity.”
The VtC programme had prepared Hasini for this moment, giving her the experience, skills, and confidence she needed to step into this new role with excitement and pride.
Well done Hasini!
