World Menopause Day is an internationally recognised event established by the International Menopause Society in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The month of October is Menopause Awareness Month, and World Menopause Day is held annually on 18 October. It aims to break taboo and improve women’s health and wellbeing by raising awareness about the symptoms of menopause and the support options available.

Each year there is a theme to shine a light on different topics surrounding the menopause. The theme for World Menopause Day 2024 is Menopause Hormone Therapy, known in the UK as Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).

With a proportion of the workforce experiencing menopause, it is crucial to raise awareness about menopause at work.

Fiona Sullivan and Susan Holtom, Co-Chairs of the CNWL 50+ Staff Network said:

“CNWL is a Menopause Friendly Employer which shows our employees that we are putting their well-being at centre stage. Staff will be supported if they need it during their menopause transition. Staff are now in a position where they can have conversations with their Line Manager along with other resources who can offer appropriate support.

We are extremely proud that CNWL actively supports menopause in our workplace”.

Laura Knight and Janice Sparkes, Co-Chairs of the Women's Network said:

We know that in 2019, 3 in 5 menopausal women were negatively affected at work, with 900,000 women leaving their work due to the menopause* so it can’t be ignored.

It may sound strange to think about celebrating this “transition”; However if we think about how far we have come in being able to openly discuss and support all those going through this transition, and the statistics suggesting that a third of women in the UK are currently peri or menopausal it really does need to be celebrated!

The womens network are so proud of the work that CNWL has done so far, becoming a Menopause Friendly accredited employer- putting us in just 5% of NHS trusts to do so. This work means we have a Menopause policy, support groups and clear information on our womens health pages to support staff and managers to get the information needed to support staff.

We want to ensure that no staff member feels alone in this and would love to hear about how we can do more. So please take the time to learn more, join the events and celebrate this October!
