Meet Miglena! Her journey from community support volunteer to support worker with Step-Down services is all about creativity, kindness, and connection. Through the Volunteer to Career (VtC) programme, Miglena poured her whole heart, and some serious artistic flair into her volunteer role, making a big impact along the way and gaining invaluable skills for her future career.

Finding her place in Step-Down Service

When Miglena first explored NHS volunteer roles in mental health, the Step-Down service immediately grabbed her attention. “It offers the chance to make a real difference in people’s lives,” she says.

Supporting individuals during such a critical time truly resonated with her, and she was ready to roll up her sleeves and jump right in with tons of enthusiasm, excited to connect and help in any way she could.

Taking those first steps

Like any first day, stepping into her role as a Community Support Volunteer brought a mix of excitement and curiosity.

“I was not entirely sure what to expect, so the first few times I went with an open mind,” she recalls. At the beginning, Miglena focused on introducing herself, explaining what she could offer, and, above all, being consistent. “With each visit, I felt more at ease and became increasingly interested in their stories.” Bit by bit, she found her groove, building trust and making a real difference.

Creativity at the heart

For Miglena, creativity was everything! “I have been thinking how to help service users gain essential life skills in a way that feels engaging and empowering,” she says. She knew that just saying, “I can help you with budgeting,” might not exactly light up the room. So, she brought in fun, hands-on activities instead! From bracelet-making and painting to baking cakes and cupcakes, each session offered a chance to relax, get creative, and pick up some useful skills along the way.

One of her best ideas came from a chat with a service user struggling with social anxiety.

“I wanted to demonstrate that she could create beautiful things from the comfort of her own home and potentially sell them on platforms like Etsy,” Miglena explains. This creative twist gave the service user a sense of possibility and confidence, and it worked wonders!

Moments that stick with you

One memory that’s stayed with Miglena happened during a necklace-making session. “One of the service users said, ‘One day, I don’t know when, but I will be on TV wearing this necklace,’” she remembers with a smile. Hearing someone’s hopes and dreams tied to something they made together? That kind of moment makes it all worthwhile.

Fun, laughter, and growing together

The creative activities quickly became a weekly highlight!

“The activities have been very well-received. During these creative sessions, we sit together, talk, and listen to music,” Miglena says. One service user became so immersed in painting that they created three pieces in one go! “It was incredible to witness, and it has opened up a wonderful space for us to discuss our feelings, emotions, and experiences.”

Every session turned into a lively, joyful gathering filled with art, connection, and laughter.

“It definitely helps them feel more comfortable with each other because we sit together, talk, and make things,” she shares. For many, it was their first time trying something creative, sparking imaginations they didn’t even know they had. “We even hang their paintings on the wall, and seeing their artwork displayed was inspiring,” she says. “We baked cakes and talked about our Hollywood crushes, which brings a lot of laughter and creates a really warm atmosphere.” It’s those little moments that turned each session into something truly special.

Moving into a Support Worker role

When Miglena successfully moved into a support worker role, she was beyond delighted. “Very happy! I am very grateful and excited. I am looking forward to building a long career out of supporting people in their mental health,” she says. Moving from volunteer to a formal role felt like the perfect next step

“It gives me validation that what I do is appreciated and that I am on the right path,” she says. With the support of the VtC programme, she feels ready to take on more responsibilities and make an even bigger impact.

Lessons from volunteering

Looking back, Miglena reflects on how her experiences shaped her for this new role. “My volunteering experiences, particularly the creative work, have helped me develop strong ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking and problem-solving skills,” she says. These skills will be invaluable as she faces new challenges and brings a fresh perspective to her work.

Miglena’s advice

To anyone thinking about volunteering, Miglena has some heartfelt advice:

“I would say, don’t hesitate. Volunteering is an incredibly rewarding experience that teaches you so much about yourself.” Her journey shows just how much you can gain, from valuable skills. “You’ll gain valuable skills, meet amazing people, and make meaningful connections,” she says. “It’s a chance to give back and grow at the same time.”
