Mary Anne Nathan, who has worked at St Pancras Rehabilitation Unit since 1991, has spoken to Nursing Times about the ethos of rehabilitation nursing.

Now a Ward Sister, Mary Anne spoke about supporting patients to recover after life-altering conditions such as strokes, spinal cord and brain injuries.

By guiding patients to rebuild their function and independence, rehabilitation nurses help individuals return to work and daily life sooner after a traumatic injury or illness.

In the interview, Mary Anne said: “You do the hard work, we will support you” – the powerful mantra she shares with every patient, encouraging them to take an active role in their recovery.

She also pointed to challenges in the field, including the increasing complexity of cases and the rising number of younger stroke patients requiring rehabilitation.

The article follows the announcement of the National Rehabilitation Centre, which aims to drive innovation, research, and education in rehabilitation care.
