CNWL has produced two leaflets about sectionng under Section 2 and 3.
If someone is sectioned, this means that they are kept in hospital under the Mental Health Act 1983.
There are different types of sections, each with different rules. The length of time that someone can be kept in hospital depends on which section they are detained under. Someone may may be sectioned if they or someone they know has raised concerns about their mental health.
What will happen once they are sectioned depends on their specific mental health problem and need for care and treatment, and personal circumstances.
